December 7, 2009 Remember
Pearl Harbor, 68 years ago today! Jamie and I attended an
auction in Nodaway County, Missouri on Saturday. It was a well located tract that has been managed for its
hunting prospects; row crop with buffer strips in between, 30 plus acres in
CRP for some time yet to come, and about 70 acres of pretty good cropland
scattered amongst the CRP-buffer strips.
It was on a good hard surface road, not too far from Maryville. The CRP hurt its overall
cash flow. The buffer strips made it pretty tough to farm because it ended up
with several small fields. There were about twelve
people at the sale, not counting realtors, owners and auctioneers. The farm brought less than
$1850 per acre. I think we'd have done
better selling this farm privately. The
auction method of sale has been working very well for the better quality
farmland, but it’s not necessarily the best way when the farm is specialized
or not exactly top quality row cropland. |
