Big Lake is an oxbow lake located in Northwest Missouri. It is halfway between Omaha, Nebraska and Kansas City, Missouri via Interstate 29. It offers approximately 625 acres of some of the best water skiing and boating you will find. For a Missouri Lake, this is one place that boating, fishing and water skiing all come at an unbeatable price!

VILLAGE ORDINANCES: Big Lake is in a floodplain and therefore, the Village has a floodplain management ordinance. This ordinance is required by the Federal Flood Insurance Program. A floodplain development permit shall be obtained for ALL proposed construction or other development, including the placement of manufactured homes. No person, firm, corporation, or unit of government shall initiate any development or substantial improvement or cause the same to be done without first obtaining a separate floodplain development permit for each structure or other development. ALL new construction MUST acquire a floodplain development permit BEFORE construction begins. New construction, mobile homes, relocation of cabins, & substantial improvement (any construction costing more than 50% of fair market value) must elevate to a minimum of one foot above base flood elevation. Elevation required must be determined by a licensed surveyor and varies significantly from one location of the Lake to the next. You must acquire a floodplain development permit for all construction, even if you do not with a current license and ready for highway use, and is not permanently attached. b) if the recreational vehicle is NOT a truck camper, pop-up camper, motor home, and not legally licensed, you are to fill out & sign a permit with the Village clerk stating that you move your trailer every 180 days. These building permits & flood ordinances must be obtained so that the Village will not lose their eligibility to remain in the flood program and so that individual property owners may continue to purchase flood insurance to protect their investment. Big Lake Improvement Association has been chartered to organize property owners for the purpose of improving the Lake & the surrounding area. Membership is VOLUNTARY. Big Lake Village Board is the governmental body originally established to solicit Missouri funding assistance in road improvement. The Village also establishes various ordinances designed to collect taxes, provide management of water supply, and coordinate fire department related agreements. Board members are elected by a vote of full time residents and serve a two-year term.
